The New Releases Show with David Mellor - Saturday 18 April 2015, 9pm

Exquisite harp music, comedy overtures, consummate piano playing and a classic record label of the 1950s and 1960s - all on Mellor's menu tonight.

This week, David Mellor is very excited by the new album Voyage by the Dutch harpist Lavinia Meijer. "She plays really wonderfully well," enthuses David.

All the transcriptions and arrangements were created by Meijer herself, who sets out to imitate the sounds of the original instruments on the harp. The instantly recognizable Clair de Lune  by Debussy  , and Satie  ’s various Gymnopédies  and Gnossiennes  are very attractively played and crisply recorded, and a Yann Tiersen track bring back memories of the great film Amélie .

David's verdict: the former Classic FM Drive Featured Album is "very entertaining, very worthwhile and very relaxing indeed."

Also tonight, David delves into a bumper box of classic recordings from the Mercury Living Presence label and considers an album of Great Comedy Overtures by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra as the week's Best Bargain – "Very good stuff here and very good value."

And there's a chance to hear the great pianist Louis Lortie who has released the fourth album in his series of Chopin 's complete piano music.
