The Neville Marriner Takeover on Classic FM - Tuesday 15 April 2014

A whole day devoted to the great British conductor on his 90th birthday.

For the first time in Classic FM's 21-year history, we are devoting an entire 24-hour period to one artist: the great British conductor Sir Neville Marriner.

Tuesday 15 April is Sir Neville's 90th birthday – and Classic FM is celebrating by playing nothing but his own recordings from midnight onwards.

Sir Neville Marriner is second only to Herbert von Karajan as the most recorded conductor in history, and the vast majority of recordings featured today will showcase the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields – the ensemble Sir Neville founded in 1958.

Classic FM's day of celebrations include a brand new recording of Mozart concertos, conducted by Sir Neville, which features as John Suchet's Album of the Week at 10.15am, and a special Full Works Concert with Jane Jones at 8pm, giving listeners the chance to hear some of the conductor's most acclaimed recordings, in their entirety.

Speaking about this special day of programming, Sir Neville Marriner said, 'I am delighted that Classic FM is helping me to celebrate my 90th birthday. The Academy has been a major part of my life and I'm looking forward to celebrating over 50 years of working together.'
