The Full Works Concert - Monday 15 September, 8pm

Jane Jones marks the debut of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra under Sir Thomas Beecham on this day in 1946, and plays some favourites from the Classic FM Hall of Fame.

Tonight Jane Jones gives us the opportunity to hear some real favourites from the Classic FM Hall of Fame on the Full Works Concert.

There's Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet, referred to by the composer as ‘the Stadler quintet’ in honour of his clarinettist friend for whom he wrote the piece. It was considered by many to be almost a dummy run for the great clarinet concerto.

One of the masterpieces of the modern cello repertoire, it's strange to think now that Elgar's Cello Concerto wasn't that widely performed until a certain Jacqueline Du Pré got hold of it in 1965. The premiere recording though was made by Beatrice Harrison, with Elgar himself conducting in 1920. Tonight the cello part is played by Zuill Bailey.

Also tonight, Jane marks the anniversary of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra’s debut. It gave its first performance on this day in 1946, with Thomas Beecham on the podium. We hear him conducting the orchestra in Delius's On Hearing the First Cuckoo in Spain.
