Everything You Ever Wanted to Know about Classical Music - Sunday 25 January 2015, 9pm. Catherine Bott marks the 70th anniversary of the birth of Jacqueline du Pré.
The late, great Jacqueline du Pré would have turned 70 on 26 January. She was acclaimed as one of the outstanding cellists of the 20th century before her career and life were cut short by multiple sclerosis.
Tonight, Catherine Bott plays some of du Pré's greatest performances and asks, in addition to du Pré, 'Who were the greatest string players of all time?'
Listen out for performances from some other great cellists Pablo Casals, Paul Tortelier and David Popper, as well as compositions from the great violinists Tartini and Paganini, recordings by legendary fiddlers David Oistrakh and Fritz Kreisler, and viola player Nobuko Imai.
