Everything You Ever Wanted to Know about Classical Music - Sunday 26 April 2015, 9pm

Who taught the great composers how to compose? Catherine Bott finds out.

This week, Catherine asks: "Who taught the great composers how to compose?"

There are many fascinating musical connections, as Catherine delves into some of the unsung heroes of classical music, as well as finding out which composers passed on their wisdom to others.

J.S. Bach spawned and educated an entire musical dynasty – but his son C.P.E. Bach was also a highly influential teacher in his own right.

And in the 20th century perhaps the greatest teacher of them all was Nadia Boulanger, who helped Aaron Copland, Philip Glass and Astor Piazzolla reach new heights of composing greatness – as well as Burt Bacharach and Quincy Jones.
