Alex James's Date Night - Saturday 31 October 2015, 7pm

Alex James takes you through the coming week and its musical anniversaries.

Tonight Alex marks the anniversary of the birth of the late, great movie music maestro John Barry, born on 3 November 1933. At this time when James Bond can be seen everywhere, it's appropriate to recall Barry's contribution to the series; he composed 11 Bond scores. He also wrote the Classic FM favourites, Dances with Wolves and Out of Africa.

There’s also a theme of musical upheavals running through this week's show, as Beethoven travels to Vienna to study with Haydn,
Rachmaninov travels from his Russian homeland to America, whilst Dvorak leaves there to return to Prague.

And Alex has a feast of world premieres to celebrate, including Saint-Saens’ Piano Concerto No.5, Rimsky Korsakov’s Capriccio Espagnol, Mozart’s Symphony No.36, Brahms’s Symphony No.1 and Sibelius’s Finlandia.
