Join Alex James as he casts his eye over the week ahead in classical music history, picking out all the important premieres, anniversaries and notable dates.
Among Alex James's highlights this week is the 70th birthday of the American conductor Leonard Slatkin. Born in Los Angeles to a distinguished musical family - Slatkin's parents were founding members of the famed Hollywood String Quartet. He began his musical studies on the violin and studied conducting with his father Felix. He's currently Music Director of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and the Orchestre National de Lyon, France.
Alex also marks the 25th anniversary of the première of John Tavener's groundbreaking work The Protecting Veil, and tells the intriguing story of how Rossini's month-long holiday became a four-year absence from home, much to the consternation of Mrs. Rossini.
