Alex James's Date Night - Saturday 27 June 2015, 7pm

Alex James picks out all the most important dates, anniversaries and ‘on this day’ events.

Tonight, Alex lights birthday candles for the great German violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter. She was discovered at the age of 13 by Herbert von Karajan, who invited her to play with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. At 15, she made her first recording of the Mozart Third and Fifth violin concertos with Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic.

Though her repertoire includes many classical works, Mutter is particularly known for her performances of contemporary music. Several pieces have been specially written for or dedicated to her.

Welsh soprano Katherine Jenkins also has a birthday this week. She turns 35 on Monday - Alex pays tribute to her as well.

And why did Queen Charlotte beg J.C. Bach to stay in London rather than return to Italy in the 18th century? You can find out with Alex this evening.
