Alex James's Date Night - Saturday 27 December

For his final programme of 2014, Alex James looks at the important events in the classical music world that occurred between Christmas and the new year.

Tonight Alex James begins with music from Wagner's opera Die Walkure, which the composer finished work on exactly 160 years ago today.

Alex is also promising performances from the violinist Nigel Kennedy, who has his birthday on 28 December, the conductor Sir Antonio Pappano, who was awarded a knighthood in the 2012 New Year's Honours, and there'll be birthday celebrations for the British choral conductor Stephen Cleobury.

There are also anniversaries of premieres of the Symphony No.4 by Brahms and Prokofiev's ballet Romeo and Juliet
