Andantino Georges Enescu
Alex turns his spotlight on the important anniversaries, birthdays and events in the world of classical music over the coming week.
Alex also marks the first performances of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No.1 and Brahms's Symphony No.4 – both premiered on 25 October, albeit it 10 years apart – as well as Elgar's Cello Concerto, which received its premiere on 27 October 1919. And we'll hear from the Philharmonia Orchestra, which gave its first concert on 25th October 1945.
Looking further ahead to the rest of the week, there will be music by The Snowman's composer Howard Blake to mark his 76th birthday, as well as an appearance from the legendary soprano Dame Joan Sutherland, who first stepped onto the Royal Opera House stage on 28 October 1952.
Plus the story of a rather unfortunate fish supper for Franz Schubert.
