Alex James's Date Night - Saturday 23 January 2016, 7pm

Gustavo Dudamel

A happy birthday to the Dude...and other musical anniversaries to celebrate.

Alex James takes a look at some of the most significant anniversaries in the classical music world in the week ahead.

Tonight, he celebrates the première of Mozart’s opera Cosi fan tutte and find out why another première – in 1859 of Brahms’s Piano Concerto No.1 – did not go down well with the critics.

Alex also marks the birth of one of the UK’s greatest cellists, Jacqueline de Pré, and Italian opera composer Giuseppe Verdi.

There are also some birthdays to celebrate, including British clarinettist Michael Collins, Swiss flautist Emmanuel Pahud and Venezuelan conductor Gustavo Dudamel (pictured).
