Alex James's Date Night - 19 July 2014

Alex James continues his new series looking at premieres, ‘on this day’ events and major anniversaries in the world of classical music over the week ahead.

This week, Alex James begins by marking the birthday on 19 July of two fine Scottish musicians: the violinist Nicola Benedetti, who is turning 27, and percussionist Dame Evelyn Glennie, who will be turning 49.

There's also a birthday celebration for the great Portuguese pianist Maria–Joao Pires, who turns 70 this coming Wednesday.

Alex then tells the tale of how George Gershwin came to be the first American-born musician to grace the cover of Time magazine (on 20th July 1942) and also shines the spotlight on the Polish composer Henryk Górecki, whose choral work Totus Tuus was premiered on 19th July 1987.
