Alex James's Date Night - Saturday 19 December 2015, 7pm

The Nutcracker

Alex James marks the great musical anniversaries coming up in the week ahead.

On this week’s show, Alex celebrates the anniversaries of the premieres of two landmark pieces by Beethoven – his Fifth Symphony and Fourth Piano Concerto .

The opening nights of Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker (pictured), Schubert’s opera Rosamunde and Prokofiev’s Lieutenant Kijé are also among the anniversaries being marked tonight.

And there's an academic appointment in St. Petersburg to celebrate for Russian composer Alexander Borodin and birthday candles are lit for cellist Steven Isserlis and conductor William Christie.
