Cowan's Classics with Rob Cowan 7pm - 9pm
Alex takes another whistle-stop tour through the week ahead in classical music.
Alex James kicks off tonight's show by marking the 175th anniversary, to the day, of Robert Schumann’s marriage to fellow composer and pianist, Clara Wieck – and he promises to tell the story of why their wedding day was preceded by a year-long legal battle with Clara’s father. We’ll hear music by both Robert and Clara tonight.
If you've been listening to Saturday Night at the Movies, you will know that it's also Hans Zimmer's birthday today, so Alex will shine the spotlight on a few more of the movie maestro’s finest scores.
Looking ahead to the rest of the week's anniversaries: the was the week when Handel completed Messiah; when William Walton premiered one of his most famous works; when Dvorak set sail for America, Rachmaninov stepped onto the podium for the very first time, and Vivaldi joined the clergy.
And there are birthday celebrations too for the great American soprano Jessye Norman.
