Rachmaninov's a cappella choral composition - also known as Vespers - written and premiered in 1915. The piece, setting texts from the Russian Orthodox All-night vigil ceremony, is possibly Rachmaninov's finest achievement and "the greatest musical achievement of the Russian Orthodox Church". It was one of the composer's two favourite compositions; he requested that its fifth movement be sung at his own funeral.
