HJ Lim takes on her musical monsters

Virtuoso pianist HJ Lim shares her thoughts on stage fright and Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 2 with Jamie Crick, ahead of her London debut at Wigmore Hall.

Virtuoso pianist HJ Lim, who is performing at Classic FM Live in September, is at the height of her classical music career. Playing massive works like Beethoven’s ‘Hammerklavier’ Sonata and Rachmaninov’s epic Piano Concerto No. 2 seems daunting enough, let alone performing them to thousands.

After playing the piano from the age of three, Lim is unfazed by her London debut at the Wigmore Hall this evening, where she'll tackle Beethoven as well as Rachmaninov's complete Études-tableaux . She’s extremely excited about taking on two pieces she describes as emotional and technical monsters.

Her personal tactics for keeping stage fright at bay before a nerve-wracking performance are pretty simple: “If I think, then it’s not good at all,” she said.
