The album from the Moldovan virtuoso has been chosen from more than 800 new releases this year to win the coveted prize at this year's Gramophone Awards.
Patricia Kopatchinskaja is the winner of the Recording of the Year category at this year's Gramophone Classical Music Awards. Her recording, an album of Hungarian violin concertos by Bartók, Eötvös and Ligeti is the winner of the Concerto category at this year's awards, and has been chosen from the 11 category winners.
Speaking to Classic FM's Bill Overton, she said: "It's so so fantastic! I can't really believe it. I probably need time to digest it! I think it's a great honour, and a big pleasure."
The disc serves as a memorial to the loss of life in the Columbia space shuttle accident in 2003, which caused the death of all seven of its occupants. Eötvös’s violin concerto Seven, is sub-titled ‘Memorial for the Columbia Astronauts’, and references each of the astronauts throughout the work.
