Turning 21 is quite the milestone birthday. On 7 September 2013, Classic FM celebrates 21 years of broadcasting - but what had the great composers achieved by this age?
It's perhaps no surprise that Wagner, master of impressive operas, had written his first one aged 20, titled The Fairies. By this time he'd already enrolled at Leipzig University, taking composition lessons from the local church's musical director. He was so impressed he arranged for Wagner's Piano Sonata in B flat to be published as his Opus 1 in 1831 when the composer was just 18.
