The World's Greatest Music
Turning 21 is quite the milestone birthday. On 7 September 2013, Classic FM celebrates 21 years of broadcasting - but what had the great composers achieved by this age?
Rachmaninov had casual piano lessons from the age of four and went on to study at the Conservatory in St Petersburg. Unfortunately, he failed his exams, and was forced to transfer to the Moscow Conservatory. There he had a little more luck, passing his final exams with honours in the spring of 1891 - he even started writing his Piano Concerto No. 1 around this time, only to revise the work in 1917 at the age of 44.
