The World's Greatest Music
Turning 21 is quite the milestone birthday. On 7 September 2013, Classic FM celebrates 21 years of broadcasting - but what had the great composers achieved by this age?
Mendelssohn was something of a child prodigy, who made his first concert appearance around the age of nine. He'd written his first published work by the time he was 13, and wrote his first symphony, Symphony No. 1 in C minor, when he was 15. It wasn't until his String Octet in E flat major that he demonstrated his musical maturity - written at the tender age of 16.
