Turning 21 is quite the milestone birthday. On 7 September 2013, Classic FM celebrates 21 years of broadcasting - but what had the great composers achieved by this age?
Haydn was forced to grow up pretty quickly, moving to live with a schoolmaster away from his parents at the age of six. He moved to Vienna in 1740, when he was just eight, and worked as a chorister for the next nine years. He discarded many of his early compositions as apprentice works, but wrote a Missa Brevis by the time he turned 21 in 1853, marking his transition from trainee composer to musical heavyweight.
