In another good year for film scores (Thomas Newman's Skyfall soundtrack, Mychael Danna's Life of Pi soundtrack, Alexandre Desplat's Rise of the Guardians soundtrack), Howard Shore came up trumps again. By using a deft mix of familiar themes from the original Lord of the Rings Trilogy and bold new cinematic scoring, he's made another familiar, fantastic symphonic evocation of Middle Earth. Irresistible.
