The editor of Opera Magazine chatted to Anne-Marie Minhall about the importance of recognising opera's diverse talent - and it's not just about giving gongs to the best singers.

Before Harry Hyman created The Opera Awards this year, there was no equivalent platform to praise the many talented people who come together to create the art form. In a bleak economic climate, Opera Magazine editor John Allison explained the importance of recognising the up-and-coming stars of the genre to Anne-Marie Minhall.

"We wanted to something that would reflect the whole operatic endeavour," he said. "Obviously we can't give prizes for the best wigmakers and best prompters and all the other jobs that go into opera, but a lot of what it takes to put on an opera is reflected here."
