The second group of winners of the Music Teacher of the Year Awards were announced last night at the Music For Youth Schools Prom at the Royal Albert Hall.
Private Music Teacher of the Year Claire Hennie explained the secrets to her teaching success - the flute, piano, clarinet and saxophone teacher makes sure she gets to know each of her pupils as individuals to help them feel motivated.
"I had a little boy who loved football, and we composed football chants to help him with his flute playing and learning more rhythms and it really motivated him," she said. "I think getting to know them and finding out what makes them tick is really important."
She was joined on stage by Peripatetic Music Teacher of the Year, Matthew Tiffany, who explained why he's fighting for music education in Leeds.
"From a financial point of view and a space point of view, it is a tough fight, but people keep playing music anyway because they love it," he said.
The two winners got an unexpected surprise upon receiving their awards last night, as actor Damian Lewis and director Sam Mendes presented the certificates onstage, praising their efforts as inspirational teachers .
