Nominated artists in the annual magazine awards include pianists András Schiff, Mitsuko Uchida and Marc-André Hamelin, pitted against each other in an all-piano Best Instrumental Recording category.

Elsewhere, last year's Best Vocal Recording winner, tenor Jonas Kaufmann, is in the running for the same award this year, facing competition from Gerald Finley, Wolfgang Holzmair and Mark Padmore.

The Orchestral category will be hotly contested this year, with the Gewandhausorchester, London Symphony Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and others preparing to do battle.

Gramophone's editor-in-chief James Jolly commented: "The 2013-14 crop of recordings has been truly vintage, proving that imagination and flair are not in short supply. Our voting process is rigorous and fair and draws on expertise of Gramophone’s unrivalled panel of critics."

Categories in the 2014 awards also include more specialist awards for best concerto, early, choral and Baroque vocal recording, among others.

A list of winners from the shortlist, three from each category, will be announced on August 27th. The awards ceremony itself will then be held on September 17th, when all the eventual winners will be revealed.
