Leif Ove Andsnes at the Gramophone Awards 2012

It's 20 years since Leif Ove thought about recording an album of Schumann's work, so there was a lot riding on its release. Now he's won a Gramophone Award, and shared his pride with Classic FM.

Gramophone Awards 2012

You may have heard Leif Ove Andsnes playing Beethoven on Classic FM over the past few weeks, but it's his album of Schumann's music that prompted us to speak to him at the Gramophone Awards. He, along with Christian and Tanja Tetzlaff, won the Chamber category with Schumann's complete works for piano trio.

It's an ambitious project, which Leif Ove first discussed with violinist Christian Tetzlaff 20 years ago. He said it was great finally to record the music, and to be recognised with a Gramophone Award.

"It just feels like something special because these pieces are underrated and we really believe in them," he said. "I think this is quintessential Schumann."
