The Brodsky Quartet are unfazed by the demands of Tchaikovsky's second and third String Quartets on this charming recording
Repertoire: String Quartets Nos 2 & 3
Artists: Brodsky Quartet
Label: Brodsky Records BRD3500
Tchaikovsky’s Quartet No.2 is typical of its composer without being a masterpiece. Quartet No.3, however, is just that, with its magnificent slow movement including an impressive evocation of Russian Orthodox chant. The work’s main key of E flat minor is unreasonably difficult for strings but the Brodskys are unfazed by this, delivering superbly characterful performances of both works. The front-row closeness of the recorded balance is odd, but not annoyingly so.
