Nordic organ music to warm the heart

Iain Quinn makes no concessions to popularity in this imaginative and powerfully performed programme of Nordic Organ music

Repertoire: Organ Works
Artists: Iain Quinn (organ)
Rating:  4/5
Genre: Instrumental
Label: Chandos 10581

Few will have heard any of the eight works presented here or, like me, of some of the composers. However, there is much to applaud – not least Otto Olsson’s impressive Sonata. Niels Gade’s Tre Tonestykker, too, are attractive works; two premiere recordings, Larghetto by Askell Másson and Variations on a Norwegian Folk-Tune by Knut Nystedt, less so. The Coventry Cathedral organ thunders forth to great effect.
