‘One must have a little fun somehow,’ wrote Saint-Saëns, of composing his second piano trio. And both these pieces, even if they’re technically no picnic for the players, brim over with Gallic sparkle and joie de vivre. The French Trio Wanderer plays them both with tremendous gusto, the quicksilver playing of the pianist Vincent Coq proving particularly ebullient. A few rough edges in the string playing only enhances the energetic enthusiasm of the whole. Fun indeed!
