Teasing the tension from Rachmaninov
Macedonian pianist Simon Trpčeski draws out the wit and tension from Rachmaninov's piano works on this outstanding disc
Repertoire: Piano Sonata No.2 et al
Artists: Simon Trpčeski (piano)
Label: EMI 557 9432
The young Macedonian pianist Simon Trpčeski is a wonderfully unshowy pianist who gives clear-textured, unfussy and thoughtful performances in this Rachmaninov recital. And yet that’s not to say he doesn’t have a dry sense of humour too: he builds up the tension in the famous G minor Prelude with teasing wit, for example. Looked at as a complete recital the disc loses pace a little in the middle. Nevertheless, it’s an outstanding achievement.
