The Venezuelan pianist Gabriela Montero is not just a brilliant performer, she is a composer as well. On her new album she presents a superb rendition of Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No.2, and also offers up the the world premiere of her first formal composition, Ex Patria.
The piece was inspired by her passionate advocacy for the people of her native homeland and her vocal opposition to the Chavist regime.
The album marks an important point in the evolution of Montero's career - her debut as a composer and her debut orchestral recording. She excels at both.
