Michael Nyman: The Piano

Michael Nyman didn’t write the central tune that runs through The Piano - that's actually called 'Bonny winter's noo awa' - but he did compose the rest of the film's excellent score.

Released: 1993
Director: Jane Campion
Cast: Holly Hunter, Sam Neill, Anna Paquin

The Film: A woman, her daughter and her piano arrive in the remote backlands of 19th Century New Zealand for an arranged marriage. But her future husband refuses to move the piano from the beach. In order that she might get her piano back she agrees certain favours with an illiterate neighbour.

The Composer: Michael Nyman's profile rocketed following the success of The Piano and his film score went on to become a classical best seller. He's also known for his long term calloboration with British film-maker Peter Greenaway.
