CD of the week: Anne-Sophie Mutter plays Mendelssohn

Over 25 years after her first recording of the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto with Herbert von Karajan, Anne-Sophie Mutter releases this fresh new take on one of the most popular concertos in the violin repertoire.

Produced at Jakob Ludwig Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's home town of Leipzig, Germany, this is a combined CD and DVD project which includes a fascinating documentary called 'Encounters with Mendelssohn ' , being released to celebrate the composer's 200th anniversary.

Mutter is joined here by the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra - an ensemble Mendelssohn himself was Principal Conductor of from 1835 to 1847. Here, the orchestra is conducted by Kurt Masur, and they are described by Mutter as musicians who 'not only play together, they also feel together and breathe together'.

Chamber Music

Also included on this album are some delightful chamber music works; for these performances, Mutter collaborates with her long-term chamber music partners Andre Previn and Lynn Harrell.
