Michael Giaccino's Up score wins Oscar

Michael Giaccino’s score for Up has scooped the Oscar for Music (Original Score) at the 82nd Annual Academy Awards, which were presented last night at Kodak Theatre, Hollywood.

Up beat four other films in the Music (Original Score) category: Avatar, Fantastic Mr Fox, The Hurt Locker and Sherlock Holmes. Up also won the award for Animated Feature Film.

The other Music award, for Original Song, went to Ryan Bingham and T Bone Burnett for their theme song for Crazy Heart, ‘The Weary Kind’.

The three British actors nominated, Dame Helen Mirren, Carey Mulligan and Colin Firth came away empty-handed. Instead Best Actor went to Jeff Bridges for his role in Crazy Heart and Best Actress was scooped by Sandra Bullock for The Blind Side.

The Hurt Locker received six awards, including Best Picture, while Avatar, which had been nominated in nine categories, only came away with three. The Hurt Locker also outdid Avatar at last month’s BAFTAs.

This is the latest in a host of major awards won by Michael Giaccino's music for Up, which include a BAFTA and two Grammys.
