What makes Beethoven's music so uplifting and universal? Pianist Leif Ove Andsnes and John Suchet shared their love of the great musical genius.

Irrational outbursts, profound joy, poignant simplicity, and brilliant tunes. Beethoven's music speaks volumes to millions around the world.

In this in-depth interview, pianist Leif Ove Andsnes and Classic FM's resident Beethoven scholar John Suchet share their thoughts on the master in an attempt to pinpoint his universal appeal.

Leif Ove was inspired to investigate Beethoven's music after hearing a snippet playing in a lift. He explained the motivation behind his latest album, The Beethoven Journey - it's the first time he's recorded any music by the great composer.

He said: "I'm not the first in history to approach this music, and I thought I needed to have the feeling that I really had something personal to say - that I had experienced many aspects of Beethoven before I embarked on a recording."
