Symphony No.5 in E minor Opus 64 Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky
Britten, Menuhin and Gendron perform Beethoven's ghostly piano trio in D and Mozart's K564 live at Aldeburgh
Repertoire: Piano Trio in D 'Ghost' (Beethoven), Piano Trio K564 (Mozart)
Artists: Benjamin Britten (piano), Yehudi Menuhin (violin), Maurice Gendron (cello)
Label: BBC BBCL 4134-2
Recorded live at the Aldeburgh Festival in 1963, this concert feels just as vivid 40 years later. It’s a meeting of minds, each performer displaying a strong individual personality – Britten smooth and intent, Menuhin soaring above with intonation that doesn’t always work and Gendron an extrovert and eloquent cellist. It’s rather like listening to actors in a play arguing out the most ingenious of scenarios.
