Bach: Concertos italiens - Alexandre Tharaud

Pianist Alexandre Tharaud adds texture and colour to Bach's often misinterpreted Concertos italiens.

The 18th-century Italian concerto had a profound influence on Bach. He obtained copies of concertos by Vivaldi, Torelli and the Marcello brothers and learnt their styles by arranging them for solo keyboard. Placing Bach’s own Italian Concerto in this context is instructive: Tharaud draws a range of colours from the modern piano, and shows how Bach combined the athletic allegro and heart-stopping adagio of his models with his own brand of counterpoint.
