Jane Jones applauds Italian tenor Vittorio Grigolo's performance on a collection of well-chosen opera favourites
Composer: Verdi, Puccini, Donizetti et al
Repertoire: Various arias
Artists: Vittorio Grigolo (ten), Orchestra del Teatro Regio di Parma/Pier Giorgio Morandi
Label: Sony Classics 88697 72384-2
The Music Grigolo chooses an interesting mix of arias from just three Italian masters – Puccini, Verdi and Donizetti, which means favourites from La Boheme and Tosca, Il Trovatore and L’elisir d’amore, but the less well known arias are chosen to suit Grigolo’s immensely attractive tone and quality.
The Performance This is quite a test for the tenor who’s had an outstanding year on stage, but one he passes with ease. Occassionally, there’s a hint of the self absorbed, syrupy approach of his crossover debut, but it’s held in check by some beautifully subtle yet expressive singing, particularly in the arias from Puccini’s Le villi and Gianni Schicchi – which completely won me over. Grigolo has developed from light to lyric tenor, and you feel there’s more to come from this young voice already rich with plenty of colour and drama.
The Verdict Expectations were high for this latest new kid on the tenor block, but with little to complain about and plenty to enjoy, he has all the vocal confidence needed to match an assured star quality.
Want More? Florez is still the top tenor for Donizetti and there’s Kaufmann for passionate Verdi choices on Decca (475 9966).
