It is a neat coincidence that one of England’s finest composers should be known by one of its most common names. John Browne was an extraordinary artist. Working within an insular, conservative tradition, his individuality and sense of devotion shine through in pieces intended to honour the Blessed Virgin Mary. Divine music is matched here by heavenly singing from the Tallis Scholars, exquisitely so in Browne’s Stabat mater. Indispensable.
