Liebestraum No.3 Franz Liszt
Composer Ronald Corp reveals to Classic FM the line-up of what would be his perfect concert - and it's a musical journey from Vienna to Bohemia.
1. SUPPE: POET AND PEASANT OVERTURE
Let’s start with a sparkling overture, something to make you tap your feet, conducted in true Viennese style by Willi Boskovsky.
2. STRAUSS: DEATH & TRANSFIGURATION
Something more serious: The sumptuous orchestral music of Richard Strauss and a symphonic poem not often heard in the concert hall, played by the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra under Herbert von Karajan.
3. HANDEL: SAUL
This is one of Handel’s most dramatic oratorios containing some of his most glorious music. The Gabrieli Consort under Paul McCreesh would be ideal.
4. MOZART: VIOLIN CONCERTO NO.3
How does Mozart do it? The theme of the slow movement of this concerto is so touching and haunting and yet so simple. Pure genius! I would love to hear Viktoria Mullova play it.
5. DVORAK: SYMPHONY NO.4
I have a soft spot for this early work by Dvořák which is not often heard live. The Czech Philharmonic would bring out the work’s Bohemian splendour.
