Gary Ryan, composer of Birds Flew Over The Spire, is awarded a fellowship from the Royal College of Music

Fellowship of the Royal College of Music has been conferred upon classical guitarist Gary Ryan, composer of Birds Flew Over The Spire. Ryan was given the accolade in the 2012/13 awards announcement from the RCM alongside several other distinguished musicians.

Singer Alfie Boe, percussionist David Hockings, pianist Dmitri Alexeev were among the other recipients of the fellowship. Also honoured in the list was composer Steve Reich, who receives an Honorary Doctorate.

The awards themselves will be presented at a ceremony next year. For Gary Ryan, the announcement marks a long association with the RCM, having been appointed a professor there when he was just 27. Since then his teaching has become in-demand, and he has appeared as a judge for the Young Musician of the Year competition.

His piece Birds Flew Over The Spire has also become a favourite on the Classic FM playlist, and has been recorded by fellow guitarist Craig Ogden.
